May 24th Conference Call with Dr. Xavier Amador on Anosognosia
We are pleased to announce our monthly "Ask the Doctor" call featuring Xavier Amador, Ph.D. and hosted by NAMI's Medical Director, Dr. Ken Duckworth, M.D., on Friday, May 24th, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. EST.
Join us as Xavier Amador, Ph.D. lectures about Anosognosia. Anosognosia is the inability to perceive that one is ill due to impairment to the brain’s ability to see oneself accurately. It has been identified as the single biggest reason why more than 50 percent of people living with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder refuse treatment and, when they do accept it, often stop after days or months have gone by.
Remember to bring your questions to ask Dr. Amador!
Dr. Amador is the founder of the LEAP Institute. He is an internationally sought-after speaker, clinical psychologist and author of eight books, including the international best-seller, “I’m Not Sick, I Don’t Need Help” (available in 15 languages), “I’m Right, You’re Wrong, Now What,” “When Someone You Love is Depressed,” “Break the Bipolar Cycle” and “Being Single in a Couple’s World.” Dr. Amador’s expertise has made him a regular contributor to the Today Show and a featured guest on Good Morning America, CBS This Morning, NBC Nightly News, 60 Minutes, CNN, ABC’s World News Tonight and many others. He was a featured psychologist on the PBS series, “This Emotional Life.” Previously, Dr. Amador was on the Board of Directors of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and the Director of Psychology at the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Amador is also a well-known forensic psychologist who has worked on numerous high-profile cases, including the Unabomber, the Elizabeth Smart Kidnapping and 9/11 conspirator cases. Three years ago, Dr. Amador broke new ground by appearing on the reality TV show “Bethenny Ever After,” the first psychologist to allow the camera access to real-life therapy sessions. Born in Cuba and forced to flee as a child when Castro murdered his father, Dr. Amador is an avid proponent of human rights and a tireless advocate for people with mental illness.
Dr. Amador will also be giving a special presentation from 7:30-9:30 p.m. on June 28 at the NAMI National Convention, to be held at the Grand Hyatt San Antonio. Visit www.nami.org/convention for more details.
