NAMI is pleased to announce the selection of Robert M. Post, M.D. as the recipient of the 2010 Mind of America Scientific Award. The Award was presented to Dr. Post at the Reception on Wednesday evening, December 8. He is an adjunct professor in the department of psychiatry at the George Washington School of Medicine and leads the Bipolar Collaborative Network. Throughout his career, he and his group at the NIMH have focused on better understanding and treating patients with treatment-resistant recurrent unipolar and bipolar disorders. He is the author, with Gabriele S. Leverich, of Treatment of Bipolar Illness: A Casebook for Clinicians and Patients. Dr. Post organized and continues to head an international group of investigators in the Bipolar Collaborative Network focused on developing effective long-term treatment approaches to this potentially life-threatening recurrent affective disorder. A graduate of Yale University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, he was a medical intern at the Einstein School of Medicine and psychiatry resident at Massachusetts General Hospital before joining the NIMH, in 1970, where he finished his residency there and at George Washington University. After a clinical fellowship in 1973, he was sequentially promoted to Unit, Section, and Branch Chief in the Biological Psychiatry Branch, NIMH where he worked for 36 years. He is on the editorial boards of more than 10 journals and has published more than 900 scientific manuscripts.
