Inspired by her own family’s experiences with schizophrenia, Joyce Burland, Ph.D., wrote a standardized course curriculum and training guide in 1991. The Family-to-Family Education Program she authored was designed to educate other families coping with mental illness. Dr. Burland, a clinical psychologist, is the national director of the NAMI Education, Training, and Peer Support Center. The Family-to-Family Education Program, available free of charge through NAMI affiliates, has helped more than 150,000 family members of adults with serious mental illness. It will also serve as a model for NAMI BASICS, a program for parents and other caregivers of children and adolescents with mental illness, scheduled to launch next year.
