About Mental Illness Awareness Week

In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in recognition of NAMI’s efforts to raise awareness of mental illnesses.  Since then, mental health advocates across the country have joined with others in their communities to sponsor activities, large or small, for public education about mental illness.

Locally MIAW is a collaborative effort among mental health care providers and advocacy organizations called a “Celebration of Mental Health”.  Geiger Clinic of Psychiatric Care, Mental Health Association of the Rock River Valley, Rockford Health Systems, Rosecrance Health Network, Satori Pathways LLC, Illinois Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health and Justice, Shelter Care Ministries, Stepping Stones of Rockford and Swedish American Hospital Behavioral Health are partnering with NAMI Northern Illinois to build awareness and break the stigma of mental illness during this nationally designated week. Your support and presence will help to reduce the stigma of mental illness and help make NAMI’s motto a reality in our community:

“You Are Not Alone”

Our Mission Statement

mental illness and their families
