Arlington - They've won national honors, and they are now available free of charge to PBS stations for broadcast to local communities.
Produced earlier this year by the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare and Idaho Public Television: (IDPTV), with the assistance of NAMI Idaho, they are the pair of documentaries entitled "In Our Own Voice," and "Hearts & Minds: Teens and Mental Illness."
On Sunday, January 13, 2002, the National Educational Television Association (NETA) will provide a satellite feed to PBS stations across the country that are interested in broadcasting the documentaries. NAMI affiliates and members are asked to contact the programming director at their local PBS station by Friday, January 11th to request -- by letter or phone (or both) -- that the satellite feed be recorded and aired locally.
For more information, program directors can contact IDPTV producer Marcia Franklin at 208-373-7379 or marcia_franklin@IDPTV.pbs.org.
"Hearts and Minds" has received a 2001 Peabody Award and an NETA award for the best instructional programming within the PBS system. "In Our Own Voice" currently is a finalist in the New York Film Festival. NAMI also honored them at this year's annual convention in Washington, D.C., with an outstanding media award for public education.
NAMI's heralded the documentaries as a model for affiliates nationally in using NAMI consumer and family voices for public education. "We are the truth-tellers," said NAMI Executive Director Richard C. Birkel, Ph.D. "Every NAMI member has a story to tell."
