Mental Health in Developing Countries

September 5, 2007

The Washington Post  reports that war, poverty and disease are exacerbating mental health problems in developing countries.

In Africa medical professionals are inundated with patients who have AIDS and malaria, which leaves few resources for mental health.

Health experts warn that unless mental health treatment becomes widely available, the future of these countries is grim. They also stress the importance of mental health counseling from someone who speaks the language and is familiar with the local culture.

During Mental Illness Awareness WeekWorld Mental Health Day will be observed on October 10.
