Summer is halfway over, which means college students are already thinking about the school year ahead—what classes to take, which meal plan to choose and what their roommates will be like.
In the college preparation frenzy, one topic often goes overlooked: mental health. NAMI and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) want to make sure that is not the case. While suicide is at a 30-year high, and college counselors are seeing a record number of students with depression and anxiety, we need to make college student mental health a national priority.
NAMI and the NCAA co-hosted a webinar sponsored by SAMHSA on July 18 that highlighted important information in NAMI’s college guide, Starting the Conversation: College and Your Mental Health, including students’ health privacy rights. The webinar showcased the NCAA’s best practices for safegaurding the mental health and wellbeing of student-athletes through the Sport Science Institute.
Listen to the webinar recording, and learn about the signs of mental health conditions among college students, and where to seek help when they arise. Talking about mental health is important even if you don’t live with a mental illness, and experiencing recovery starts with a single conversation.
Speakers: Darcy Gruttadaro, Happy Carlock, Mary Wilfert, Dr. Brain Hainline
