I have technical skills as an Informational Technologist (IT), Large Corporate Management (V.P. Bank of America) retired, experience as a NAMI program leader for 5 NAMI programs. I oversee 3 NAMI peer programs in my affiliate, in collaborations with an Acute Care Psychiatric Hospital, developed a patient support program (Mentors on Discharge®) that reduced re-hospitalizations by over 72%, and was a charter member, President and CEO of a local affiliate that has expanded peer led programs in our county over the past 8 years. What has given me the passion to use my education and corporate skills (1960 to 2000, 40 years) to apply them to NAMI’s success? To begin with, it was NAMI’s invaluable aid which helped me with the mental health system in support of my loved one. Then it was my desire to give back after retiring from industry in 2000. I have two daughters, one of whom had a psychiatric break in 1992 just prior to graduating with honors from U.C. Santa Barbara in 1993. At that time, she was taken zip tied behind her back by the police on a 5150 in Los Angeles County. Although the police officer who took her in was very gentle with her, she still has scars on her wrists to this day from the traumatic experience. I continue to work to support caregivers like myself and our loved ones. As long as I have a pulse, this will be my purpose.
I personally have helped advance the NAMI mission in my community by training to be a program leader of NAMI programs and instrumental in expanding NAMI peer led programing. I have been on workshop teams at both NAMI National conventions and NAMI State Conferences. I am present at Health Fairs in support of NAMI programming. I collaborate with other community-based organizations for mutual support of our community’s needs.
I work well in coordination with other leaders to accomplish goals as evidenced by leading our affiliate to be the first in our county to have NAMI In Our Own Voice presentations in 4 acute care psychiatric hospitals (both nonprofit and for-profit). I have established personal relationships with those in the criminal justice system to get our NAMI programs implemented in county reentry programs. I have participated in presentations at numerous organizations in support of those dealing with a mental illness. I have participated in NAMI National conventions and state conferences for the betterment of NAMI and our programs.
