The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) - Alianza Nacional para los Enfermos Mentales – hará entrega de los "Outstanding Media Awards" (Premios a los Medios de Comunicación más Destacados), en la próxima convención nacional de Minneapolis, a dos periódicos y una red de televisión por su ayuda en hacerle frente a la crisis de la salud mental en las comunidades latinas.

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) today announced the winners of its Outstanding Media Awards for 2003, presented annually to editors, producers, reporters, writers or actors who address issues or themes involving mental illness with accuracy, fairness, and compassion.

Senator Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), in partnership with a bipartisan group of Senate colleagues, and Congressman Ted Strickland (D-Ohio) addressed the national tragedy of criminalizing individuals with mental illness today by introducing the "Mentally Ill Offender Treatment and Crime Reduction Act of 2003." 

As the third weekend of "NAMIWALKS for the Mind of America" begins, the final report and recommendations of President Bush’s "New Freedom" Commission on Mental Health  are expected soon.

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) today announced that San Francisco’s KQED Public Television will receive its 2003 Outstanding Media Award for the television documentary "Hope on the Street," produced by Michael Isip.

In a report to three leading Members of Congress, the General Accounting Office (GAO) has confirmed that states and counties force parents to give up custody of tens of thousands of children and adolescents with mental illnesses (biologically-based brain disorders) in order to secure necessary treatment -- even though child welfare and juvenile justice systems are not primarily designed to provide mental healthcare.

Thousands of Americans will take to the streets next month to support research, education and advocacy to improve the lives of people living with mental illnesses.
