Chief Operating Officer
Mike Wood has more than 20 years of experience scaling impact and transforming operations of nonprofits focused on bridging divides to address social challenges. As Chief Operating Officer, he leads the internal execution of the NAMI’s strategic priorities while ensuring overall operational excellence.
Prior to joining NAMI, Mike was COO of the Spina Bifida Association of America, where he put in place new talent, systems, and business processes to deliver year-over-year record growth and impact. Before that, he was Vice President of Strategy at March of Dimes, where he developed a new strategy and operating model to deepen the organization’s ability to address disparities in maternal and infant health.
During his seven years at United Way, Mike was part of a small team that engaged United Way affiliates around the world to support the merger of United Way International and United Way of America to create United Way Worldwide. He enhanced United Way’s standards of excellence in community engagement; developed a strategy to transform local United Ways to become more effective at mobilizing communities; and led the rollout of a common set of success measures for local United Ways to benchmark their performance.
Mike, a Harry S. Truman Scholar, holds bachelor’s degrees in business and political science from West Virginia University and a master’s degree in political management from The George Washington University. He is a proud West Virginia native who currently resides in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley where he enjoys plenty of hiking, camping, fishing, and spending time with his son, Tom. As someone whose family has been tragically impacted by the lack of quality mental health care, Mike is deeply committed to NAMI’s efforts to create a more equitable and compassionate mental health system.
