Arlington, VA - It is perhaps the most misunderstood illness in America. If all television portrayals were this good, however, life might be different.

On December 30, 2000 at 9:00 p.m., the Discovery Channel will present "Schizophrenia: Stolen Minds, Stolen Lives," a one-hour documentary that focuses on the personal cost of schizophrenia and the hope for recovery. It tells the stories of several families, including Nobel Prize winning mathematician John F. Nash, Jr. and his son, Johnny, who both have the brain disorder. Additionally, the documentary presents the latest research on schizophrenia and features top scientists such as long-time NAMI member Nancy Andreasen, M.D., Ph.D., who recently received the National Medal of Science for her research on mental illness.

The program is also scheduled to run at 1:00 a.m, Viewers are advised to check local listings for confirmation.

Produced by independent film producer Leslie Wiener, whose own brother had schizophrenia., "Stolen Minds, Stolen Lives" is a powerful educational tool that will dispel the many myths that surround schizophrenia and will give hope to the millions of Americans personally affected by the condition. It is also a candid work. It includes a scene of scientists slicing a human brain for research, only hours after the death of the donor.
