San Diego, CA — The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) honored 18 physicians with "Exemplary Psychiatrists Awards" at the international American Psychiatric Association (APA) annual meeting held in San Diego , California.
The NAMI awards are among the highest honors a psychiatrist can achieve, because nominations are made by the people who need their help the most—individuals and families who live with mental illnesses.
The 2007 awards focus especially on psychiatrists who have made substantial contributions to NAMI state or local activities, demonstrating exemplary commitment and expertise in their communities.
"We recognize these exemplary psychiatrists for their contributions to consumer care," said NAMI national executive director Michael J. Fitzpatrick. “They are the backbone to the nation’s mental health care system. With their help, treatment and recovery for our nation’s most vulnerable population is possible.”
The honorees are from 15 states: Alabama, California, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Virginia, and Washington.
