In Sickness & In Health: Facing Mental Illness & Addiction Together
This is a story of how one couple defied the odds and worked through mental illness and addiction together, and how NAMI supported them on that road to recovery every step of the way. When Denise experienced a mental health crisis and began self-medicating with alcohol and prescription medications, Roger stepped in to get her the help she needed. While Denise went to treatment, Roger found NAMI support groups and signed up for NAMI Family-to-Family classes. As Denise navigated her road to recovery, she attended a NAMI Basics class to better support herself and her children. As Roger says, “There is the family that we are born with, and the family that we need.” NAMI filled that gap for Roger and Denise, and their love story got a second chance. Denise explains, “Recovery is not a destination, it’s a road.” With NAMI’s support, they walked that road together. To find a support group in your area, go to nami.org/findsupport.
