NAMI’s primary role in research is to ensure that people affected by mental illness – both individuals and their families – have access to accurate and timely information regarding symptoms, conditions and treatments. This includes sharing new insights from research in brain science, genetics, treatment options, and other discoveries, as well as advocating for current and future research efforts.
Research is vital to help us understand how mental health conditions develop, how they impact individuals and communities, and how symptoms can be most effectively managed. Mental health often leaves us with a lot of questions – and research is one of the most important ways that we can provide answers. As a result, research is a powerful source of hope for people with mental illness and their families.
Each year, NAMI honors innovative work in the field of mental health research with the NAMI Scientific Research Award. NAMI also collaborates with leading researchers and experts from academia, industry, government and private institutions to voice a unified call for better, more effective treatment for serious mental illness through the Accelerating Medicines Partnership – Schizophrenia (AMP-SCZ).
